Between expectation and empathy: expertise negotiation and communication practices in online science communication

Whether science can solve society's most pressing problems has been the subject of increasingly heated debate, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. The tone has become more heated, society is perceived as polarized and the conflicts seem unsolvable. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to facilitate a successful understanding of social problems for which scientific expertise is needed - especially across different interests, knowledge resources and socializations. Using the example of science blogs, the project therefore deals with the question of how empathy (or its absence) can be demonstrated in language and how understanding is achieved in the context of negotiating expertise - also and especially under the influence of crises such as the Covid19 pandemic.
